Don’t be a clumsy oeuf!
Whoever coined the phrase “there’s more than one way to crack an egg” was technically correct. But there’s only one way to crack an egg safely, experts say, warning that one of the most popular methods could end up being dangerous to your health.
Many of us — even Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, who famously demonstrated her one-handed technique in an old baking video that recently went viral — do our crackling on the rim of the bowl or pan.
But there is a better, less dangerous way, said a professional writer for The Kitchn, a popular cooking site.
There are two reasons to be wary of the rim of the bowl technique, they said: “For one, this method will push the chipped shell back into the actual egg; you’re also running the risk of small fragments falling into your bowl or pan.
The second reason? Bacteria from those shell fragments can end up contaminating your food — people who like their eggs lightly scrambled or soft, for example, could risk illness if the outside of the shell is raw, the Mirror reported.
Good news, though—there’s an easy way to get the job done safely, and you don’t need to be trained, or even have any kitchen skills at all, to master the skill.
Step one – give the egg a “single, firm tap” on a hard, flat surface, the expert said.
‘”[This] The method is much less likely to result in broken yolks, or eggshells ending up in the bowl or pan,” they write.
Next, pull back the pierced shell, watching as it makes a perfectly clean break, with the yolk and whites sliding right out of the shell. Wasn’t it that easy?
Confidence “and balance” is key. Blow that egg too hard on your surface and it might break. With just the right amount of oomph, the shell ends up breaking cleanly in half.
“A single, hard knock [and] the egg will crack, separate easily, and the yolk and white will slide out, thus avoiding breaking the shell into a million pieces, getting bits of shell into the egg, breaking the yolk, or introducing any bacteria from the outside. peel until yellowish or white,” explained the professional.
“Once you try it once or twice, believe it or not, this method actually feels easier than the lip method,” they promised.
Safely handled eggs enjoy widespread popularity for their nutritional qualities – with some experts even saying they can help ‘recharge’ your immune system.
And if you’re abstaining for fear of your next cholesterol reading, don’t be—according to the medical minds at the Mayo Clinic, the oils and fats used to cook eggs may be what you really need to worry about.
Just don’t overdo it trying to be healthy – a clean eater earned her share of internet ire after suggesting people scramble their eggs in a boiling water bath, fishing out the finished product. Talk about cracking.
